Writers: frequently asked questions

How can I get the most work from CopyDesk?
When a job comes in, CopyDesk works as quickly as possible to get materials to the client. Because clients usually like to see a résumé and samples for each candidate and base their decisions upon these, it's in your best interest to keep your file with us as thick and up-to-date as possible. Clients like to see examples that are closely related to their own projects, so if we have to wait for you to fax samples or, worse, find them, the client may already have chosen another writer. So, the more material we have on hand to show the client, the better we can represent you, and the better your chance of getting the job.

Can I remain on CopyDesk's database if I don't want to sign a services agreement?
No.

Can I make changes to the agreement?
We prefer that you don't. After all, we're confident that our writer's agreement is fair as it stands.

What if I've already made contact with a CopyDesk client…
…and we put you in contact with them for a job? If the client is someone you sat next to five years ago at a conference, then the find is ours. If it's someone you have worked with recently, we ask that you keep the situation in perspective. The client enlisted the help of CopyDesk to find a writer and you may not have been considered for the project without our involvement.

Do I negotiate fees with CopyDesk or with the client?
With CopyDesk only. Clients may try to negotiate fees with you during the interview process. We ask that you do not discuss your rate directly with the client before, during or after the project. Please direct such inquiries to us.

Can I charge my regular rate for projects completed through CopyDesk?
We will do our best to get you your regular rate for projects. However, this is not always possible because of client budgets. If we offer you less than your normal rate, please do not be insulted. We realize that writers' workloads fluctuate, and that even a lower paying project may be welcome at times. However, if the pay is too low or the project is not of interest to you, please turn it down. We will certainly call you with future projects regardless; we don't take rejection personally!

What's expected of me once I accept an assignment?
That you prove you were the best one for the job. That means: arriving for appointments on-time and well-dressed; asking questions when you need answers; showing enthusiasm for your work; and meeting all deadlines. If, for any reason, you can't make it to an appointment, please contact either the client or CopyDesk as soon as possible.

Where do I send invoices and who will pay me?
All invoices and timesheets should be sent directly to CopyDesk, at which time we will bill the client. Once we receive payment, we'll cut you a check within five business days.

Once I've been contracted for a job, can I work directly with the client?
That depends on the client. Some prefer that we manage the job, while others are more comfortable working directly with the writer.

Whom do I contact if I have any problems with the job?
We hope there won't be any problems, but understand that road blocks can occur. In such cases, copy-related problems can be directed to the client and project management problems, such as the inability to meet a deadline, should be directed to CopyDesk.

What if, after completing one job, the client calls me directly to do another?
Congratulations; that means you did excellent work! We would be happy to assign the project to you. We just ask that the assignment be approached the same way as the one before it. While we encourage clients and writers to cultivate strong working relationships, a call to CopyDesk must always be the first step in the process.
